Help for a network illiterate soul!

I always thought that smurfs were happy little blue people,  WPA
was the wildlife protection agency and that I was at least moderately
computer literate.  Now I am being attacked by smurfs and I don’t
know how to stop it.  Someone please help!

OK… so I’ve read that smurf attacks are like denial of service
attacks, but when I look around I can’t seem to fiure out how to stop
them.  I’ve recently gotten a wireless router and every minute or
so it logs another smurf attack.  I figure I’m being dumb about my
security settings but I just can’t figure it out.  So if anyone
has some advice on that problem please write back.

More info:

I have DHCP server enabled… it sounds like its just a thing for the local newtork, so is that ok?

For Wireless I currently have WPA-PSK authernication, mostly because I
understand passwords and didn’t understand the others.  What sould
I do?

I have DSN relay enabled… what is that and what does it do?

The firewall settings allow ping to WAN port, deny *,* to LAN,* and allow LAN,* to *,* whatever that means

Ok… I guess I could go through more settings but I don’t know what is important & what isn’t so I’ll just let people ask.

Thanks for any help!

Wow, this is an incredibly informative article on “Smurf Attacks”:http://www.pentics.net/denial-of-service/white-papers/smurf.cgi
(I had never heard of them, either)

Anyway, like I told ya on the phone- you should turn WAN ping off, but the hits you’re seeing are your network blocking the attack, so you should be fine. 🙂
