Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
Anybody have suggestions/comments for the weblog? I know I’ve got a few, and thought others might want to chime in.I was wondering if it would be possible to do polls. Also, is there some way to view the membership list, or since you’ve got so many people who can post without registering does that simply not exist? Other ideas? (And sorry for posting so much.. I was away from my computer for over 24 hours!)
I’m just generally confused right now . . . I was looking to see if there were any new comments to my Kitten post, but I can’t find my Kitten post. Druid, did it get taken down? Or do you have to manually archive things, or am I just blind?
ShortSpeedFreak - October 18th, 2004 at 8:02 amIt just fell off the front page as new entries got added… You can still access it via the *Archives* links (it’s Oct 4 to Oct 10), or, as I do, via clicking the name of someone who posted a comment on it under the *Recent Comments* field.
Paradoxdruid - October 18th, 2004 at 9:22 amRegarding the actual content of this post…
No, a lot of that stuff isn’t possible. Yet. In the very near term, I plan to switch hosting companies, to get a server with a SQL database backend. Then I can run MUCH more elaborate software, like a UBB forum and a more complete blogging solution.
ETA is after Halloween, so I’d guess another month in total till you start seeing big changes in functionality.
Paradoxdruid - October 18th, 2004 at 11:10 amI have a few bones to pick ;-):
1) Could you structure the forum like you used to have it, so we can see on the main page which topics have been responded to instead of only the most recent few?
2) Your “last referrers” area really bugs me. It’s an invasion of my privacy to publicly post which sites I’ve been browsing before I come to your site…I’ve been meaning to tell you for awhile and keep forgetting to! Sorry!
Mallorn - October 18th, 2004 at 12:30 pmHey Mallorn- I understand how you feel about the referrers, and might remove it just because it’s so singularly useless for my page.
Something you should know, though– the referrers are sent by *your browser*, and you can opt-out at any time by adjusting your privacy settings to not share that information with the rest of the world. Right now, *every* website you visit can see the HTTP_REFER cookie that your computer is sending, not just mine.
If it’s a concern to you, I’d adjust your browser settings.
As to restoring the old forum format… I’m of two minds about it. On one hand, I’d love to be able to have a forum format with bio pages for each poster, color-cues to tell updated posts, et al. BUT- since I changed the sites format from a forum to a blog, the amount of posting done to it has multiplied like 10-fold, so maybe the old format didn’t encourage people enough. What do you think, Mallorn (and anyone else)? Think it would work and stay alive, now that the support base is there, if it was more forum-looking?
Paradoxdruid - October 18th, 2004 at 2:41 pmI like this system far more. The forum was unwieldy. It just needs tweaking (Longer “Last Comments” section, maybe one that’s “All Comments Since Last Visit”).
Owen - October 19th, 2004 at 7:26 amOh, and can you permanentize electoral-vote.com’s little image at the top of the link bar until Nov. 3rd?
Owen - October 19th, 2004 at 7:36 amThanks for letting me know about the referrer thing! Where exactly do I go to turn that off?
Mallorn - October 19th, 2004 at 10:20 amA few stop-gap measures while I search out better hosting:
* Removed Referrers
* Increased number of posts displayed
* Increased number of Previous comments displayed
😀
Paradoxdruid - October 19th, 2004 at 12:11 pmyou rock PD! 🙂
mallorn - October 19th, 2004 at 5:03 pm(Could you make it so that the electoral-vote.com image only appears when Kerry’s in the lead? 🙂 j/k)
Teisha - October 19th, 2004 at 7:01 pmCould you make it so that Kerry’s always in the lead? 😀
Owen - October 19th, 2004 at 7:39 pmJust wanted to say thanks for making it so that there are more link-dumps, postings, and comments displayed on the main page 🙂
Teisha - October 21st, 2004 at 11:06 amCould you make Bush disappear?
Or be outed as a secretly black, homosexual, hippie?
ShortSpeedFreak - October 21st, 2004 at 5:36 pmYou forgot female there.

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.
Hey all Paradoxdruid readers! I recently started up a blog on stem cells that I’d love you all to take a look at: http://www.allthingsstemcell.com/
I participated in another Barely literate book review podcast, this time on Nicholson Baker’s “The Fermata”. Give it a listen!
Obama has outlined a strategy for America, in great depth. Read all about Change.gov!
Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.ÂÂ
