Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
Now four years in the runnning, Schlock is the best sci-fi space drama comedy webcomic that I read everyday…
Right now, Schlocktoberfest 2004 is going down, which means that probably a main character or two will die. Eek! Howard (the author) never pulls his punches, and we’ve seen beloved characters die over the years.
Try starting at book 2 or 3 (there’s a little pulldown box menu beneath the comic), and learn to love the Schlock. 🙂
Edited because I’m a pour typeist 🙂
Bah, read from the beginning!

I read a few months’ worth — rather addictive 🙂
Sorry your li’l buddy, Shlock, got knocked off, Andrew. Really amazing that the author would do that to his main character and central comic relief.
Teisha - October 19th, 2004 at 10:53 amYou know, I thought it was “Schlock” (with the c), since I did take a semester of German and all.. but your repetition of the word without the c in your post made me think otherwise. Luckily the comic strip site agrees with my original suspicion.. We’re really going to have to do something about your German skills.
(But, no, I refuse to learn any French — that’s just a lost cause :-P)
Pourquois? Le langue francais est un langue tres bel. Aussi, il est parfait pour l’amour.
Owen - October 19th, 2004 at 11:39 amLe langue francais est over-rated. I mean, speaking of l’amour, saying “Ich liebe dich” just sounds so much better than “Je t’adore.”
Teisha - October 19th, 2004 at 2:04 pmSaying “ich liebe dich” sounds like a Turrettes patient with phlegm.
Owen - October 19th, 2004 at 3:52 pmYeah, it seems Spockesque, with the “a second childhood beats senility.” Hm. He did seem childlike and attracted to killing enough as it was though…
Teisha - October 19th, 2004 at 6:10 pmSo objective.
Teisha - October 19th, 2004 at 4:05 pmRetracing from that tangent…
Don’t you think Schlock might still be alive? I mean, he’s still got his head apparently… And I saw that they had another character before live on with only his head… Guess we’ll find out in a strip or two.
Teisha - October 19th, 2004 at 4:07 pmBut Schlock’s brain isn’t in his head, it’s distributed throughout his entire structure… As the author noted, most of his “brain” has been destroyed already.
I’m predicting a “Return of Spock”-esque story, where the newly growing Schlock must be reintroduced to his former life. That is, provided he doesn’t become a primal killing machine (spoiler: check out his origin story). Given that it’s schlocktoberfest, either is possible.
Paradoxdruid - October 19th, 2004 at 4:39 pmThe new storyline is different.. but getting increasingly interesting.. What is Petey up to? Hmmm…. Check out Schlock, you unbelievers!
Paradoxdruid - January 3rd, 2005 at 4:32 pmI just wanted to share part of yesterday’s comic:
“Our teraport is fine! The _universe_ is broken.”

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.
Hey all Paradoxdruid readers! I recently started up a blog on stem cells that I’d love you all to take a look at: http://www.allthingsstemcell.com/
I participated in another Barely literate book review podcast, this time on Nicholson Baker’s “The Fermata”. Give it a listen!
Obama has outlined a strategy for America, in great depth. Read all about Change.gov!
Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.ÂÂ
