Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
So, it’s that time of year again — yup, time to go out and pick up some chicks!Since we’ve got a “short acre,” we’ve always maintained a small flock of chickens. We only had six until today when we, as we usually do once every few years, got some chicks. We got three, all pullets (females), each a different breed, and (I’m guessing) all about 5-7 days old. Breeds from left to right: an Araucana, an Ancona, and a Speckled Sussex. Some cuter close-up picts:
The Araucana.
The Ancona.
The Speckled Sussex.
Of these three we’ve only had the Araucana breed before. The breeds we have right now are Buttercup (our family favorite, “Mrs. Cupps”), Rhode Island Red, Australorps, Silver-Laced Wyandotts, and Araucanas. We’ve had Golden-Laced Wyandottes and Barred Rocks before.
What’s confusing to me is that there’s actually a large variation in the coloring of Aracaunas, but what they have in common is they all lay the famous blue/greem “Easter eggs.” We had a bantam white Aracauna that died a few months ago, but it was completely different from our current large golden Aracaunas (and the type I think the chick will turn into).
Anyway, I’m sure that’s way more than any of you ever wanted to know about chickens.. but.. can’t help but share my minor obsessions 🙂
Damn, I saw “Picts” and was expecting Scotsmen. You tricked me!
Do you just keep these for the eggs?
Owen - March 30th, 2005 at 10:36 amI never get why the Hatchery doesn’t have photographs of adult chickens.. wouldn’t that be what most people would most care about?
Beyond that– SOOOO cute! Then again, I think lizards are cute. 😉
Can you name the Sussex “Stegasaurus”, “Steggie” for short?
I dig the misleading headline, you sneaky girl.
Paradoxdruid - March 29th, 2005 at 11:19 pmHave you ever read any of Terry Prachett’s Discworld? You got me thinking about the Pictsies. Hehehehehehe. Cross blue-painted, drunken, surly Scotsman with 6 inch tall pixies.
Paradoxdruid - March 30th, 2005 at 5:01 pmNot just for the eggs — it’s rather soothing to have a small flock taking pleasure in one’s backyard. (And we don’t eat our pets, if that’s what you’re wondering.)
Terry Prachett’s ” “Pictsies”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0060012366/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-2405091-9162321#reader-link “? Were they only created in his ” “The Wee Free Men”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060012366/qid=1112232230/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/104-2405091-9162321 ” book? (And that is part of his Discworld series, right?)

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.
