Blog Software Upgraded

Just a quick note– I upgraded the software that runs this website, so now it (a) should be faster, and (b) has some nice new (or fixed) features for those of you who log in and post. If you are one of those people (or want to be), read on.
The first, and most important to me of the software upgrades is a fix for the “login” bug, where you’d have to enter your login info like 3 or 4 times for the login to “take”. Now it works, and much faster.

More interestingly, the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor is upgraded. So when you’re typing a post, in the Introduction and Body fields, the little icons above the text boxes are really useful now. For instance, you can now click the little “photo” icon, select a photo on your computer to upload, upload it, automatically generate a thumbnail (small version) of the photo, and have it linked so that the small version displays in your post, but if you click on it, it’ll open the large version in a new window. Plus, it should be easier to add links, formatting, all that good stuff.

So, nice bonus if you post. And if you don’t– well, you should. If you don’t have a posting account (or don’t remember your password), just e-mail me and ask. We’d all love for you to share your thoughts. 🙂

As I was looking through the upgradable options, I came upon the area for setting the site’s title (Yet Another Community Weblog) and color scheme… I feel both are a little old, and a little out of date. Does anyone have any suggestions to improve it?

Heck, I could switch to a whole new style.

How about: “Paradoxdruid, THE WEBSPACE”, adorned with puce and fuschia paisley? (I’m just trying out the comments, I think the site’s title and colour scheme are fine). Cheers!

Um, I think the name is fine . . . it’s good and general. If you make it too cutesy and specific it might be less appealing to some. I like the colors and such just fine, although I’m always up for something darker! Dark purple, dark blue, and black, specifically. But I have no complaints about the format now.

Could you post a link to that leaves theme blog style you showed me? I really thought that was nice (though, not specifically with the themes) — I liked the format and how comments/articles came up in that one… Or was there some problem with it that I’m unaware of?

Sure thing, Teisha… I was looking at this style and this style . I like comments opening in a separate window, though. *shrugs*

I think I like the new layout better. I definitely like the header more, and there’s a nice feel of having lots of space. It’s also a lot easier to tell which “comments” and ratings go with which post. Is there anything that’s missing (I didn’t think there was), or is it all still here in a slightly different way?

Teisha - September 24th, 2005 at 6:35 am

🙂 I like the new layout, too, although I’m not sold on the orange text yet*. Everything that was there should be there still.

*Actually, there are several fiddly details I’m working to fix, as I teach myself CSS: orange text, too large of a margin between columns, making linkdump just a little wider, and shrinking the header by maybe 20% (or choosing a new one, maybe from a photo of mine).

Change is good, though– It seems much happier and livlier to me!

Okay, you didn’t really ask for my opinion, but I’ve got a big mouth, so here it is:

I like the new font and header, but everything is too spread out. I hate scrolling 😛 It’s a nice change aside from that.

Mallorn - September 26th, 2005 at 6:04 am

Thanks for the opinion, Mallorn– I was hoping someone would comment.

I made it a little wider, and eliminated a lot of white space between headings and such (yay teaching myself CSS markup!). Next up is shrinking the header graphic by about 50% in height… now I think I’m satisfied. 🙂

Enjoy!

Much better! I’m loving it!

(I’m still MIA due to my move, but I promise I’ll post more when things calm down!)
