Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
There’s lots of pictures on the PD Gallery that you probably haven’t seen, like the super-nifty Halloween photos. Plus, I finally set up a proper gallery for my friend Scott. Check it all out, tell me what you think of the purdy pictures!
You went as a MAGNET??!!
Mallorn - November 1st, 2005 at 5:33 amYeah, I wish I had pulled off a more elaborate costume, too. In my Defense, *chuckles* my Defense was a week away, and costumes weren’t exactly my highest priority. Funny story? Scheduling conflicts have pushed it to the 21st instead. Such is life.
What did *you* go as, Mallorn?
Paradoxdruid - November 1st, 2005 at 6:10 amI think you need to go on more trips so your personal gallery can try to rival his 🙂
Teisha - October 31st, 2005 at 6:28 pmOh that’s right..I’d forgotten about your defense. In that case, nice exercise in efficiency of time 😉
I didn’t do anything for Halloween.
Mallorn - November 1st, 2005 at 7:13 amSpeaking of pictures, I just uploaded some excellent pictures of my parents and I exploring the tidepools at Cambria . 🙂
Mallorn- nothing for Halloween? :-/
And Lily, if you’re browsing- how did the Tiamat costume go?!?
Paradoxdruid - November 5th, 2005 at 3:29 pm“Speaking of pictures” — yes, because we were just talking about pictures most recently on this thread, and it was the most recent post/comment too… Smooth. Just kidding, of course 😉 Really nice pictures! You guys look like you had a fun time out there — I love those Tide Pools The seals are cute too 🙂 For those unfamiliar with it, Cambria has a nice webpage.
I did nothing for Halloween too… just served the local kids, which was fun enough for me. Sure made them happy 🙂
Teisha - November 5th, 2005 at 3:47 pmYea..I was exhausted by Halloween. My harddrive crashed Saturday morning just before I was headed into work so, in typical Colleen fashion, I freaked out and had to fix it immediately 😛 But I dual-booted XP and Ubuntu all by myself!
Mallorn - November 5th, 2005 at 6:19 pmI have a picture of me in my thermometer, aka “cold”, costume, and I’m just getting around to moving it to someplace decent.
Ran through your undergraduate gallery, and like them. I recognize most of the people. The “happycat” pic is great just for the faces of both Megan and Cat.
stephen - November 6th, 2005 at 10:50 amI think I’ll really like Ubuntu..at the moment it doesn’t get much use though. I need to get my wireless card to work on it before I can use it as my main operating system.
Mallorn - November 7th, 2005 at 5:23 amYou still don’t have your wireless card working in Ubuntu? Not even with ndiswrapper? *sigh* For those of you who might not know, Wireless is one area where Linux has trouble, not because of any innate failing, but because the wireless card makers won’t release linux versions of their drivers… or even the specifications, so Linux programmers can write them! This means that Linux hackers have to reverse-engineer the wireless cards from square-one. Ndiswrapper is kind of a “last resort” program that was written, which lets Linux use windows drivers– but that’s definitely a kludge.
Have you tried the official Ubuntu forums, Mallorn? There’s some smart people that’a’ways.
Oh yeah… pictures. Umm… soon, my lab’s website will have photos of us modeling our lab t-shirts, which I will promptly link to and show off. 😀
Paradoxdruid - November 7th, 2005 at 9:20 amI’ve installed ndiswrapper and run it, and it appears as though my card will connect to the WAP, but I can’t connect to the internet. Last time I got to this point, I got stuck with some DHCP error. I haven’t spent enough time this go around to see if I have the same error or a different one.
I have checked the forums…very useful!
Mallorn - November 7th, 2005 at 10:27 amWell, handing candy out can be rewarding.. especially if you can put a little scare into the kiddies. *evil grin*
Congrats on dual-booting WinXP and Ubuntu by yourself, Mallorn– how are you liking Ubuntu?
Thanks for the compliments on the pictures, Teisha– the seals ARE cute. 🙂 And yes, the “happycat” picture is just too much hilarity.

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.

Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.ÂÂ
