Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
So, I bought one. For those of you who know me, this was an utterly ridiculous purchase. The only video game I’ve ever enjoyed was Smash Brothers, and that was only because I could mash enough buttons to turn into a rock and squish people. Sometimes.
But, what can I say? I got caught up in the craze and WANTED. Pure, unadulterated WANT.
Now that I’ve got one….any suggestions on what to do with it? Favorite games? Internet thingy-type-stuff? Some way to finish the dang warthog races in Rayman’s Raving Rabbids?
It’s about time, Mallorn. ๐
Guitar Hero III is a thing of beauty, if you want to waste more money (and free time, and get carpal tunnel).
Personally, I still love playing Tennis in Wii Sports.
You should post your Wii friend code– I’ll send you fun Miis, and silly messages, and what-not. ๐ Mine is 2805 4915 7607 8142 (add me!)
… and now, for the big news: Super Smash Brothers Brawl came out yesterday, and it is amazing. Go, buy it now. Seriously. I got mine from Costco for $43, and it’s worth every penny. My Brawl code is 2449-4301-7844 — we can play online, just like you’re actually together (word to the wise, set up skype / google chat / some other voice program on a laptop nearby, so you can taunt and chat while playing ).
Good for you getting one!
Paradoxdruid - March 10th, 2008 at 12:20 pmI was sooooooooo close to buying Guitar Hero weekend before last but decided to hold off since I’d just bought one game and had Smash Brothers on pre-order ๐
I like Golf from Wii Sports, but I’m a bit disappointed there are only 9 holes. Is there anyway to unlock more?
I’ll send you my friend code as soon as I figure it out! I was AZ over the weekend and, although I brought the Wii, I didn’t have internet access. This week looks promising though.
Smash brothers…I’m a bit disappointed. I pre-ordered it a month ago and it’s not supposed to arrive until Wednesday!!! Bad people. Bad.
But once I get it…how in the world are we going to be able to play at the same times? ๐ And how do I set up google chat?

My Dad loves Tiger Woods golf, and I’ve had fun playing it with him, if you’re into the golf thing and can spend some more money (the game is beautiful, almost lifelike). I actually find the golf on Wii Sports kind of limited. *shrugs* It’s all about the Tennis and Bowling.
Paradoxdruid - March 10th, 2008 at 12:39 pmWhen I picked up my Wii (I had to have someone else buy it since I couldn’t find one, having to work during the day and all), I decided I wanted to buy a game along with it. I went to Slackers (new favorite store ever!) and bought a used copy of the first Rayman’s Raving Rabbids. You experienced gamers would probably be bored, but I get a kick out of it.
You get kidnapped by crazy bunnies and have to solve a number of mini-games to get free. One of them is a FPS-like game where you shoot bunnies with plungers. You can also capture them and throw them at other bunnies. It’s a pretty sadistic game, but, hey! Look who bought it!
So far, I’ve been able to beat enough of the games to keep moving on, but I can’t do the racing ones ๐
Mallorn - March 10th, 2008 at 12:49 pmSo aside from Smash Brothers, what other games do you guys have?
Mallorn - March 10th, 2008 at 1:04 pmLet’s see… We have: Wii Sports, Guitar Hero III (awesome), Super Smash Brothers Brawl, the Bleach fighting game (so-so), Nights (disappointing), Big Brain Academy (one of my favorites), Mario Galaxy (great fun), Wii Play (not worth it unless you need another controller), and Zelda (fun). I think that’s it. I’m looking forward to Wii Fit, Harvest Moon/Animal Crossing, Soul Caliber Legends, Rock Band, and Endless Ocean.
Paradoxdruid - March 10th, 2008 at 3:20 pmAbout Nights — we only tried it once after getting it, but I’d be up for giving it another go… the graphics are amazing, but the controls aren’t that great (though there are options that we didn’t really fully explore). The real downfall was that each “level” is on a timed racing track, in essence, and some of the first ones were really tough…
To elaborate on Paradoxdruid’s comment — “Zelda” is a whole lot of fun, with a beautiful, interactive world and you can be an awesome slashing fox. The downside for me was that it was a bit too time consuming — neither of us has had time to beat it yet.. “Mario Galaxy” is a really great two-player game (playing with a helpful “star bit collector”), though the second player is not required, and there aren’t many other good two-player games out there yet. “Big Brain Academy” has repeatedly been fun with large groups of people — up to 8 can play “simultaneously” (you quickly pass off the wii motes and only need two wii motes for this).
Also, we play a lot of our Gamecube games on the Wii, such as Harvest Moon/Animal Crossing (I prefer Harvest Moon, and I actually revisited it a lot recently after not playing for a year or so).
teisha - March 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pmmy big splurge (if I do it!) will be to get a Nintendo DS lite with TETRIS!! (But I confess that playing Guitar Hero on Wii over winter break was terrific fun!) (I just am not sure where in our house we would have good *room* for a Wii setup, since it is such a physical game and needs space….)
Meg - March 11th, 2008 at 1:25 pmHey Meg,
Just a warning- Finding Tetris for the DS can be hard; I believe it’s been out of production for a few years. That said, our friends who have it love it and say it keeps the original “spirit” of Tetris.
Personally, I’m in favor of gadget-indulgence. Go for it! ๐
Paradoxdruid - March 11th, 2008 at 2:19 pmIt goes for about $40 on ebay, so not too hard.
Christina does love it. I think it’s probably the only game the DS gets used for these days. ๐

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.
