Just wanted to share that my first first-author paper is now online! In the journal Stem Cells and Development, here’s my paper on “Roles of Integrins in Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Growth on Matrigel and Vitronectin.”
So after a week at my gig, I’ve decided that I was robbed blind by my high school.
To start with: They’ve got a friggin’ book club. Reading Da Vinci
Code, yes, but still, a book club. How sweet is that.
They’re also showing movies somewhere (Timeline and Dicky Roberts, neither too great, but the point stands).
And the teacher (Dr. Bob) today was teaching the Fluid Mosaic Model
of the cell membrane, complete with signalling oligosugars,
cholesterol, and membrane-bound proteins. While he was teaching that,
I flipped through the biology textbook: It has a whole chapter on
evolution. No backwood hick bullshit here. And one of my professors
at CU was a consultant on it! Dr. David Armstrong from the EPOB
department (taught Darwinian Revolution). I mean… hell, that’s just
awesome. Wednesday we’re looking at cheek cells!
My high school bio class was taught by the frickin’ tennis coach.
Sounds about right.
Gilvoro - September 20th, 2004 at 6:05 pmWhen my high school came upon the subject of evolution my teacher told the class something to the effect of, “For the next couple of weeks we will be discussing evolution. You can’t understand biology without understanding evolution. We won’t teach any competing ‘theories’ since I have a background in biology, not theology. If you want to learn about the other stances, talk to you clergy members.”
stephen - September 21st, 2004 at 11:10 amThat’s really great. I remember that my 7th grade middle school biology teacher, right here in Boulder, Colorado, skipped over the evolution chapter because it wasn’t proven, apparently. I had a great relationship with that guy — later, when a student in our class made a “science project” on disproving evolution, and I asked too many probing questions, and expressed doubt as to how one could use the scientific method to -test- and prove evolution to be false, the teacher pulled me aside after class. He wanted to tell me that if I had had a science project (as I had in nearly all my years before moving to Colorado, but never did after this souring experience), that he would approve it no matter what it was.. and that I shouldn’t be so critical, or something. Luckily, he retired that year.
Teisha - September 21st, 2004 at 1:34 pmNo shit. EDUCATION is a sad reminder of the chances I missed.

Just read a fascinating (if lengthy) essay on disruptive technology and the future of scientific publishing. Well worth the read!
Just wanted to share Mint.com’s Visual Guide to Deflation, which is quite explanatory.
Hey all Paradoxdruid readers! I recently started up a blog on stem cells that I’d love you all to take a look at: http://www.allthingsstemcell.com/
I participated in another Barely literate book review podcast, this time on Nicholson Baker’s “The Fermata”. Give it a listen!
Obama has outlined a strategy for America, in great depth. Read all about Change.gov!
Okay, I’ll admit that it’s entirely possible that I am the last person to learn about this website*, but it’s really addictive.Â
